Laugh It Off
Back in fifth grade, Natsha was in a Christmas pageant. She had to memorize a couple of sentences, but when it came time to perform, the words refused to cooperate. Picture a young Natasha, clutching a teddy bear, trying to say 'Pippi' and ending up with 'pee-pee.' Cue the laughter from the audience. It was a disaster! But hey, we live and learn. Fast forward to today, and she’s picked up some fantastic tips along the way.
Embrace the Imperfections
Getting tongue-tied is the story of Kim’s life. She’s in a live session, and her brain decides to play hide and seek. Her brain gets stuck, and she just can't seem to get out of her own way! Through the years she’s gathered a treasure trove of tricks to help embrace the mishaps and navigate those moments.
Tips and Tricks to Overcome the Stumbles and Bumbles:
1. Create Muscle Memory:
Think of all the songs you know by heart. Apply the same principle to difficult words or phrases in your script. Sing them slowly and then gradually speed up. Soon, your brain will catch up, and those words will roll off your tongue effortlessly.
2. Pointing and Quotation Marks:
When you hit a stumbling block, point to the word or phrase. It might sound silly, but it works! Alternatively, use quotation marks in the air. Something about this visual cue connects with your brain, making it easier to articulate the words.
3. Phonetic Spelling and Rhyming Associations:
Phonetic spelling can be your best friend. Break down complex words into syllables and emphasize the right ones. Additionally, create rhyming associations. If a word sounds like another word, use that similarity to your advantage.
4. Get Help from Scriptwriters:
If you're unsure about the pronunciation, don't hesitate to ask scriptwriters for help. They can leave a voicemail with the correct pronunciation or record a rough audio file for you. Capitalize the emphasized syllables to guide your delivery effectively.
Stumbling and bumbling is part of the world of voice acting. Laugh off the mishaps, embrace the imperfections, and apply these tips to conquer those tricky moments. Now, go out there, rock your voiceover sessions, and remember: we all err and fumble, but that's what makes us human.
