Surviving as a Voice Over Parent: Our Tips and Tricks
We know firsthand how challenging it can be to balance parenthood with a career in voice-over work. We want to share some of our experiences and tips for navigating this unique balancing act. From dealing with interruptions to finding ways to cope, we hope these insights will help you manage both aspects of your life more effectively.
The Challenges of Being a Voice Over Parent
As voice-over artists and parents, we understand the struggle of finding quiet time to record amidst the chaos of family life. Whether it's the kids, the dogs, or the cat, there's always something vying for our attention. However, we've learned that it's not about suffering through it but rather finding creative ways to cope.
One of the funniest stories we have is when Natasha was on a Zoom directed session at the beginning of quarantine. The client was working from home for the first time and had his young children with him. During one of the takes, the client's husband forgot to mute himself and asked the child if they had gone poop! Despite the chaos, Natasha continued with the session, and the client was incredibly understanding.
Coping Strategies for Voice Over Parents
Setting Boundaries
One of the strategies that has helped us is setting boundaries. Whether it's establishing quiet hours or creating a designated workspace, setting boundaries can create a more conducive environment for work.
Utilizing Technology
Technology has also been a lifesaver for us. Having a smartphone that allows us to check our emails on the go has been incredibly helpful for staying connected with clients and managing our business while on the move.
Scheduling and Time Management
Effective scheduling and time management are crucial. By scheduling our work and personal commitments, we can ensure that we have dedicated time for both.
Flexibility and Adaptability
Being flexible and adaptable is key. Sometimes, we need to start dinner early or find other creative solutions to balance our work and family life.
Embracing the Chaos
Despite the challenges, we've come to appreciate the blessings of being able to work from home. Embracing the chaos and finding humor in the moments when things don't go as planned has been key to maintaining our sanity.
Balancing parenthood with a career in voiceover work is no easy feat, but with the right strategies and mindset, it's possible to thrive in both roles. By setting boundaries, utilizing technology, and embracing the chaos, you can find a balance that works for you.
