In this week's episode, we're diving into a variety of topics, sharing our unsolicited opinions with you, our lovely audience! So grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let's get started!
Facebook Groups: A Community or Chaos?
Facebook groups can be a fantastic resource for voice actors, providing a platform for networking, learning, and sharing experiences. However, not all groups are created equal. Some can be repetitive, with members asking the same questions over and over again. While this can be frustrating, it's essential to remember that for many, these questions are new and seeking guidance is natural.
Among the plethora of Facebook groups, there are a few standout communities worth checking out. The VO Collective is known for its professionalism and open discourse. VO Community, hosted by Debbie Irwin, and Veneur, led by Mark Scott, are also highly recommended.
Voiceover Conferences: Worth the Investment?
Attending voiceover conferences can be an enriching experience, offering education, networking, and community building. However, the costs can add up quickly, with expenses like registration, travel, and accommodation. As such, it's crucial to choose conferences wisely.
Look for conferences that offer valuable educational opportunities. While larger conferences like VO Atlanta are popular, consider smaller, lesser-known events that may offer unique insights and networking opportunities. And remember, online conferences can be a more cost-effective alternative, especially if travel costs are prohibitive.
Speechless: Being Kind in a Competitive Industry
While the industry can be competitive, it's essential to maintain a positive and supportive attitude towards fellow voice actors.
We’ve both observed unkind behavior, such as people being overly critical or mean-spirited in online interactions. It’s disappointing to encounter such behavior - there’s definitely space for a more supportive and encouraging environment within the VO community!
Behavior that is unethical or disrespectful is a big “red flag”. It’s important to recognize and address this behavior in order to maintain a healthy and professional industry culture.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and lose sight of kindness. Whether online or in person, it's essential to treat others with respect and compassion. Remember, your actions and words have an impact, so choose kindness always.
Finding Balance in the VO Industry
The voiceover industry is a vibrant and exciting field, full of opportunities for growth and community. While it's essential to stay competitive and pursue your goals, it's equally important to remain grounded and kind to those around you. By finding this balance, you can thrive in this dynamic industry while fostering meaningful connections with your peers.
So, as you navigate the world of voice acting, remember to stay true to yourself, stay kind, and keep learning and growing. Your voice is unique, and your journey is yours alone. Embrace it, cherish it, and let it guide you to success.
